These people are all heavily coached in how they give their speeches. Analyzing their body language is about as pointless as analyzing their words.

Sadly, he was/is actually great as a candidate, as he gets those populist juices flowing and mobilizes an unfortunately large, shrill, and often feckless demographic.

Now as a president, he’s awful and offal, but as a candidate to get people moving, he’s a gold mine.

The funniest ones are analyzing Melania’s expressions and movements - she’s had so much work done,  I doubt any of it is intentional.

They might be coached, but a disproportionate number of GOP speakers are  not experienced enough to put that coaching into action. Seemingly everyone in the GOP platform is a newcomer to the political stage, many of whom I’ve simply never heard of before this election cycle. Meanwhile the Democrats are fielding career politicians who have had an established public presence, for decades in some cases. Even if you don’t subscribe to their ideology they’re still professionals at what they do and are known quantities. Meanwhile, the Republican convention is just a bunch of untested randos screaming into microphones.

Sadly, this is exactly right. Trump is able to play on fears of his supporters while eliciting anger from his opponents, which I think plays a small role in the racial reckoning the US is experiencing right now. (I think the sense of frustration has been building in minority communities and would likely have boiled over with the stress of the pandemic without Trump, but I also think he’s actively made it worse, possibly intentionally)

So, Trump can read a room and elicit emotion fr I m crowds.  He's horrendous at managing an organization,  especially in the area of hiring competent subordinates and giving them the authority to make decisions.  He'd struggle to effectively run a government 1/10 the complexity of the US..

This was a very good, if not basic, analysis. Body language studies is also something I do for my profession, and a lot of the understanding of it (both as a analyst and as a speaker) is natural or innate.

His analysis of Trump’s body language is spot on, and is likely intentional. He *is* very comfortable in this setting - in fact, non-questioned prepared speeches is probably what he’s best at. And I think this is partly why his supporters continue to see him as the candidate of the people - because he *doesn’t* act presidential, doesn’t take the office too seriously, doesn’t give some building and some position great reverence. This is what they want, and are reading in his disdain for the office as his “relatability” and how he’s an “outsider”, ignoring that fact that while he may be an outsider, his interests are not what aligns with theirs.

Shitty businessman and deplorable statesman , but he knows how to be a promoter, or as I like to call it, a carnival barker. He knows his audience and can pull their strings (and open their wallets).

I also believe there is intent in this. He’s a loathsome person, but he’s not completely stupid. His dogwhistles aren’t accidental, he knows he is mobilizing a particularly regressive segment of society, and he knows he can profit by it. That’s the bottom line. Just as Putin benefits from American instability, so does Trump. His movement wouldn’t work if everything was stable and happy.

I suspect if he hadn’t been born into slumlord wealth where he’s never had to really lift a finger and never really worked a day in his life , he’d be running a particularly shady BHPH car lot or hawking spurious supplements to sickly old people or similar.

“ Meanwhile the Democrats are fielding career politicians who have had an established public presence, for decades in some cases.”

Looking around at America, I’m not sure that’s seen as a good thing. Hence why a bunch of randos screaming into a microphone have had the presidency for the last four years.

Sadly, yes. The whole Trump phenomenon has been disturbing to me from day one when he said “ Only I can save you. Only I can keep you free from the other invading our society.”

This is exactly the message the leader of the NSDAP used in Germany in the 1930s. That leader was also good at whipping a crowd into a frenzy. That leader also had a preference for centralizing all of the power in himself and him alone. Only his opinion mattered.

The only encouraging thing is American Civil society seems to be  somewhat stronger than Germany’s was at that time. Also Trump seems to be less competant as a manager than the guy my one prof referred to as “a short dark Austrian with a sense of destiny.”

No, but either have their opponents, so the point is mute. People vote for who they identify with, whether or not they do a good job.

He knew how to play into the fears and needs of tens of millions. I can’t hold it against many who voted for him 4 years ago - American society is a litany of disenchantment and declining standards for people of all backgrounds. But to repeat the choice is another story, as in my opinion, anyone from a typical socio-economic background who says life is better now than before the last election is either being delusional or deceptive, or both.

Fortunately, things aren’t quite as bad as in the days leading up to 1933, and those leading the populist regressive charge today are even less competent than in the past. At least we can hope. I also don’t see a real sense of destiny in this bunch, just a desire for some profit. It also takes a toll, just as Obama appeared to age quickly during his tenure, 45 isn’t exactly looking like the picture of vitality 4 years in.   I suspect at least at times, he knows he’s in over his head, and when it finally does end, he’s never going to have a day of peace for the rest of his life.

That’s an interesting read. It does give some insight on states of mind expressed through body language, but does not, and is likely not intended to say much of the meanings and intents of the speeches.

That is one of the least partizan articles I've seen on Politico.com too.

I think your second paragraph is perhaps the most spot-on, objective analysis I’ve read about the durability of the Trump phenomenon. I’ve said many times that the man is extremely  adroit, and cunning, in bringing along his followers. Animal cunning.

Also, and along, I think, with what you are saying: of all I saw and read in that piece, I thought that Trump’s hugging the podium, along with the representative on the battleship, were the most likely genuine traits on display. I also thought that Melania’s facial expressions when Ivanka walked on the stage were unfiltered as well, though they had everything to do with contact lenses, bright lights, possibly a breeze, and general nervousness. Not drama.

So while the Dems gave these calm, measured, positive, sedate, ineffectual, limp-wristed presentations, at a time when we need to hear decisiveness and righteous anger from them, the randos could be gutting your dog in the front yard as they tell you you’re under attack by some political boogeyman, and you’re at least captivated by the delivery.

The Dems are not in it to win this election whatsoever. Biden is a fucking joke of a candidate, Pelosi continues to elicit an air of elitism, and even AOC, who I respect very much, was part-and-parcel to this entirely underwhelming message. There is no war in Ba Sing Se.

I’m voting Giant Meteor this year. What a fucking shitshow.

The randos have the advantage. It doesn’t matter what they do at this point; they’re effectively running unopposed.
